Object, now in its seventeenth year of publication, was designed by Andrew Brown, who developed its distinctive appearance and attention to visual materials over those years. We seek to continue this tradition as we change to online publication. The seventeenth Object is published open-source and online for the first time, with the intention to distribute content as widely as possible, increasing readership and public engagement via the department’s growing digital platform. The journal represents the diversity of objects and issues being pursued by postgraduates in the Department; similarly, the range of methodological strategies with which the authors engage demonstrates how the production and reception of interpretation within the visual arts continues to be questioned and renegotiated according to a variety of formal and theoretical priorities. The vibrancy and dynamism of our research community is further manifested in the list of theses currently in progress within the Department, included at the end of the volume.

Our status as an accredited journal, confirming our place within the critical literature of art history, is reliant upon the process of external peer review. The review panel, comprising former postgraduate students of the UCL Department of History of Art who now hold academic posts in universities both in Britain and abroad, share their time, knowledge, and expertise, and we wish to extend to them our gratitude for their contribution. Object is supported financially by the Department of History of Art and by its staff, who serve as members of the Advisory Board. We would also like to thank past contributors, members of the Editorial Board, and external reviewers for making the journal such an esteemed and vital aspect of postgraduate experience at UCL.

We always welcome feedback and both the Editorial Board and individual authors may be contacted by email: object@ucl.ac.uk. Our website provides comprehensive information on all of our previous volumes, as well as details of how to subscribe to the journal: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/object.
